Large for Gestational Age (LGA)
The average newborn weight is about 7 pounds 8 ounces (3,400grams). The term macrosomia is used to describe a newborn with an excessive birth weight, which literally means "large body". The diagnosis of fetal macrosomia can be made only by measuring birth weight after delivery. Fetal macrosomia has been defined in several different ways, including birth weight of 8 lb 13 oz to 9 lb 15 oz (4000-4500 g) or, greater than 90% for gestational age. High birth weight (HBW), babies weighing over about 9 pounds (4,080g) fall into the 90th percentile for weight and are known as large for gestational age (LGA) babies. About 10 percent of all babies weigh more than 8 pounds, 13 ounces (4 kg). With about 1.5% of babies their birth weight was equal to, or was greater than 9 lb 15 oz (4500 g). Rarely do babies weigh over 10 pounds (4.6kg). Although most LGA babies are born at term (37 - 41 weeks of pregnancy), a few premature babies may be LGA. Low Birth Weight Babies
Akbar - 19 pounds, 3 ounces (8.7 kg), September 21, 2009
| The boy was born on Monday September 21st at the Abdul Manan hospital in the town of Kisaran, in the strictly Islamic province of North Sumatra. The delivery of Muhammad Akbar Risuddin by cesarean section took 40 minutes and the operation was complicated because of his unusual weight and size. The baby boy made his way into the world at 19.2 pounds (8.7 kg) -- about three times the weight of an average newborn. His middle name, Akbar, means big in Indonesian. ![]() The giant baby Akbar at 1 day old, lies next to a more typically-sized newborn. The boy's massive size was likely the result of his mother, Ani, 41, having diabetes, Dr Sitanggang said. She had to be rushed to hospital due to complications with the pregnancy, which had reached nine months. The baby, her third, was the only child not delivered by a traditional midwife. "This heavy baby made the surgery complicated because of his unusual weight and size. especially the process of taking him out of his mum's womb. His legs were so big," Dr Sitanggang said. The boy is in a healthy condition despite having to initially be given oxygen to overcome breathing problems, the gynaecologist said. "He's got strong appetite, every minute, it's almost non-stop feeding," he said. "This baby boy is extraordinary, the way he's crying is not like a usual baby. It's really loud, the mother and child are both in good condition." Akbar Risuddin is the third child of father Muhammad Hasanuddin, 46, and mother Ani, 41. His two 'little' brothers weighed 11.6 pounds (5.3 kilograms) and 9.9 pounds (4.5 kilograms) at birth."I'm very happy that my baby and his mother are in good health," father Muhammad Hasanuddin said. "I hope I can afford to feed the baby enough, because he needs more milk than other babies." Mother Ani smiles while touching her newborn baby boy, who was born weighing 19.2 pounds (8.7 kilograms), and was 24.4 inches (62 cm) length, head circumference 17 inches (43.5 cm). He is the heaviest newborn ever recorded in the country, a doctor said. Indonesia's previous heaviest baby, weighed in at 15 pounds 2 oz (6.87kg), length 23 inches (59 cm) and head circumference 14.5 inches (40 cm). He was born in 2007, in Karanganyar, Solo, Indonesia, according to Indonesian Museum of Records website. ![]() | ||

Shaune - 14 pounds, 7 ounces (6.5 kg), August 6, 2007
| Amanda gave birth naturally with only gas and air. Miss Ellerton was taken to University of Hartlepool Hospital in England when she started having twinges. As a seasoned mother of two, Amanda Ellerton wasn't going to make a big deal about delivery number three. But in the end she didn't really have a choice. Nurses broke her waters but the birth quickly became complicated because of the size of the youngster. His shoulder became lodged behind the mother's pelvic bone and it took four midwives to set him free. After a six-hour struggle and with the help of four midwives, her son Shaune made his entry into the world weighing an astonishing 14lb 7oz (6,548g), almost twice the birth weight of the average baby. "I couldn't understand why he wasn't coming easily," said Miss Ellerton, who gave birth naturally with only gas and air to help her. "Once his head appeared I could see the surprise on everyone's faces. It was very painful but it was all worth it for our big bundle of joy."There were gasps around the delivery room as medical staff and father Robert Nicholson looked the chunky chap up and down. And there were more gasps when he was placed on the weighing scales. Miss Ellerton, 24, whose other children Alex John, four, and Amy Louise, two, weighed around 8lbs (3.6kg) each, said, nothing had prepared her for the size of the task. "The other two were both average weights and I did not expect Shaune would be any different," she said. "Even when I was carrying him, I didn't think anything was up". "If they had known the size they would have given me a Caesarean." "He was ten days late, so I knew he would be a bit bigger, but certainly not the size he was. It wasn't until he started coming that I knew something was amiss." "We had bought some baby clothes but they were no use. Robert had to rush out and buy clothes for a six-month-old instead." Mr Nicholson, 28, believes it his family line which is responsible, as his mother was born weighing 13lbs. Great job, well done Mum Amanda, and midwives! Goes to show that your body is capable of delivering a baby, even at over 14 lbs, naturally! 'Super Tonio' was born weighing 14.5 pounds (6.6kg)![]() Nurses in the hospital joked as they placed 'Super Tonio' next to another newborn baby. The hospitals director said the baby is healthy despite high blood sugar and a slight blood infection, both of which are being controlled so that the child can get on with his normal life in a few more days. Antonio's mother, Teresa Alejandra Cruz, 23, and father, Luis Vasconcelos, 38, said they were proud of the boy, and noted that Ms Cruz had given birth to a baby girl seven years ago who weighed 5.2 kilograms (11.46 pounds). ![]() Other Big Babies![]() [ picture left ] August 10, 2006. But she was exposed as a fake when a doctor called at her home to do a check-up and she ran away, reports - Jilin News. As people are widely concerned about the health of Qiao Yubo and her five babies, the super pregnant woman confessed to the local reporters and doctors that the whole thing was made up. It all happened when a hospital in the capital city of Changchun became aware of the news and offered a free medical check-up. She was exposed as a fake when a doctor called at her home to do a check-up and as she realised the extent of the check up she took off through an open window. ![]() When the doctors and reporter finally caught up with her, she was hiding out in a wash room in her sister's house. According to Mr Li who is the top Chief at the hospital, Qiao knelt down, cried out, and told them she was not carrying quintuplets. Calming down, Qiao pulled out the stuff she had been cramming into her belly, this inluded an amazing three bed quilts, a dozen sweaters, shirts, cushions, hats and a whole variety of other objects. The contents of Qiao Yubo's 175 cm belly Qiao later admitted she had stuffed clothes under her dress to fake her pregnancy to please her husband, Liu Defu, who had been in a car crash. She was originally pregnant with twins but miscarried them after falling. She didn't tell her husband because he had his leg fractured in a car accident. Fearing that the miscarriage might be a hard blow to her husband, Qiao held back the truth.Qiao became pregnant again a month after her miscarriage, which gave her an idea; to make up a belly with clothes and other stuff before the belly got really big. She then added an item inside every day, and her belly grew accordingly. Surprisingly enough, even Qiao's husband had no idea that Qiao was was bigging up her belly until the arrival of the hospital staff. He knew she was having twins, but just assumed that there were more in there. "Since I knew she was pregnant with multiples, I dared not touch her, even in sleep." Liu has now forgiven his wife: "She was taking care of me when I was injured, and she didn't want me to get hurt again by learning about the miscarriage," he said. "I was thinking I could not afford five babies, so I hoped the media exposure would arouse the society's attention and some people might give a helping hand." the paper quoted Liu Defu as saying.
